On Saturday, Jan, 23,2010 Professor Mark Bryans delivered what I considered to be outstanding, highly educational and professional knife seminar which included unarmed tactics along with knife defense and offensive tactics. The 6 hour curriculum was exquisitely presented and I was fortunate enough to participate in such an invaluable instructional course. Prof. Byrans is, and always has been, one of the most motivational and inspiring self-defense instructors I have ever known, and the tactics taught (and well received) were to be held in the same high regard as those of the late John Styers and Col. Rex Applegate.Without the use of ego and Rambo machismo, Prof. Bryans was able to captivate, read and direct his students to a better understanding and knowledge base of real world self defense. For those "in the know", the use of offensive and sometimes defensive knife tactics are an invaluable life-preserving curricula. I can truly say Prof. Byrans saved lives after that...

Martial Arts History - Question For Prof. Steiner

Dear Brad,

This is actually a question from me that I will post on the site.

Could you please write us a descriptive Time-line of the history of what you consider to be the main branches of the various Martial Arts? (ie, Judo, Ju-Jitsu,
Karate, Kung-Fu, Wrestling, Boxing, etc and how, where and when they started.) I've read that you said that they began in China. Right?

Thanks a lot Brad for your time,

Bob

Dear Bob,

Thank you for your question, which I confess with all due humility, I am only able to answer in the most general way. What is more, my answer must, I'm
afraid, be regarded more as personal opinion and surmise, rather than cold fact. (In my own defense, however, I will say that there is no one who could provide
a genuinely accurate and thoroughly verifiable answer to your question. The truth is that there simply isn't sufficient documentation to be ironclad in an
answer, and most experts...

In the latest Sword and Pen there are some links to videos looking at the mindset of attackers/killers. I have looked at some of them and some of these people
are just downright scary in their attitude. Also, a good article on the Yawara or hand stick.

However, my question for Mr Steiner is, would he consider for a future issue including some good links to free videos of combatives training/techniques
information?

SOG Question

According to many of the articles and books I have read, the same hand-to-hand techniques taught to SOG members (SEALs, Special Forces, Force Recon, etc) are
taught to the general population. What is it about the SOG soldiers that make them so much more dangerous than an ordinary soldier or even a civilian trained
in the same manner? I have known a few people in military law enforcement and all have said the thing they dreaded most was having to apprehend one of the SOG
members, due to the safety risk it put them in. My thinking is this group of people have been taught a totally different mindset to combat and self-defense.
That being a mindset of balls-to-the-wall, survive at any cost way of thinking.

I know we have a lot of intelligent people here, so I would like to put this out for your comments. All are appreciated.

Bob,

Could you ask Mr Steiner for his input on this?

As I search the web in my spare time, I usually go into sites that focus on military and civilian CQC.
I have been disgusted by the large number of so called "Combative style" teachers out there boasting their "unique" WWII methodology of
combat training.

I screen through these sites and am sickened by the shear bullshit that that these "master's of combat" boast about their system in seminars and
teachings based on Fairbairn and Applegate's books.

These so called experts are plagiarizing, and using titles like "Amer---n Combat---s' and "Canadian Com---o" and CQB combative techniques.
None of their sites talk beyond the concept of techniques like chin jabs or knees to the groin.
What they teach is either too little of the big picture or too much of the small picture.

Mind set, legality, focus, proper training and drilling, controlling your environment, being prepared - color...

Greg Anderson is one of the most serious and disciplined students of my System – and the fruits of his years of devotion to study are more than apparent in this combat manual.

Some people who devote themselves to the study of a martial art learn it; others – a very, very, very few – LEARN it. They really "get the message"– live it, breathe it, train with it upper most in mind, and demonstrate as they develop over the years not merely an absorption of the mere mechanics of the system, but an integration of their soul and spirit with the system, throughout their entire being.
