hi to everybody,,, i just felt like saying a few words about this subject, with the recent discussions over Brooks new book etc,i realise that i obviously don't know everything about training, far from it,but it does seem to me that Dick Conner got it right when he wrote in Hardgainer issue 86 that the great lesson of drug free lifting was to train less and train harder.i think that really says it all.even on reduced volume routines we probably do to much and train to often.how many of us would actually just train one particular lift on one training day,and lets say train two other lifts each on their own over lets say a ten day period?the progress you make ,,you cant help but enjoy it!many of the old timers trained along these lines.many of these guys where the strongest that ever lived. From what i have read of Bobs training ideas etc it would seem that the older trainee trains every 5 days or so and when i asked Jim about his most productivr training routine it seems it was quite...

I just received a copy of Brooks Kubik's new book "Gray Hair and Black Iron." Has anyone read it yet? Any opinions? I just started reading it. I'm interested in his ideas as they relate to strength training for older lifters. By any definition, I am an older lifter, and I am curious as to how he is training today. What's great about this forum, is that a lot of us are in the same boat, and the exchange of ideas is beneficial to all of us. I will let you all know what I think of the book.

.all trap bars here are hexagonal,thanks.... i was thinking the other day how many of us live thousands of miles apart, yet train along many of the same
principles. some of us may even use the same rep and set scheme for some exercises. but few of us have trained with or watched each other train.if we did we
may find that even though lets say we all completed 1x 5 reps for one top set of bench presses our time under load may be very different,we would think we
where completing the same exercise as each other but it would be very different, with this in mind it takes me 40 seconds to complete my set of 5.i just thought
it may be interesting, amusing to see how we differ,,, thanks john

The High Pull - An Excellent Exercise

Over the last couple years, I have become a real fan of the barbell high pull. It really is an effective exercise and I believe it stands on equal footing
overall with rows, deads and cleans. This is not an attempt to prove it is the best back exercise on the planet, but to give some of my thoughts on why it is
a worthy tool in the training toolbox.
When I refer to the high pull, I simply mean grabbing a bar with an overhand, shoulder width (usually) grip and pulling it up somewhere between the waist and
the head without flipping the bar back at the top as with a clean. Though I have read some good articles on form in some old issues of Milo and other
publications, I keep it pretty simple.

Some nifty advantages of the high pull are: it is probably the heaviest lift you will ever contract your arm with. Though, I don't know that it's a
prescritption for herculean biceps, it sure does strengthen all that connective tissue and forearms. Slowing that heavy...

4 Ways to train to failure

Forum,

In my humble opinion, there are four types of training to failure. I would be interested to know people's personal experience with which mode they use
most and find most effective. The first type of a failure is a good honest set where the last rep just stalls and won't go up. You are pumped and slightly
burning, but you don't yell or dig deep to make it go up. While your mind may be into the movement to a point, there is no real psychological
supplementation to will the weight up. Your set is done, time to prep for the next one. This type of failure is compatible with higher volume training for
most conditioned individuals. Jack Lalanne recommend 20 sets per bodypart, all done to failure. I'm sure this level of failure is what he recommends.

The second type of failure involves the maximimum amount of willpower you can use without making it a life or death mental framework. The last rep under
your own power may take six or...

hi i was working this last week at an old friends house of mine and we got to talking about training, his name is mike baker, and he is around seventy.he had his
own gym,and a massive sign up saying,"no drugs, drug users;he says it was the only gym to do this in the UK at the time.he was telling me how he used to
train, and it was quite volume related compared to what most of us here would do today, having said that he only ever did one top set of anything.working down to
quite low reps in most exercises.he had a very good physic and was very strong,he at one point in his twenties was eating twenty four raw eggs a day! god talk
about dedication.i heard some stories of his meetings with some of the greats as Reg Park, and others,it made me realise how little dedication i really put
into my training, anyway it was good to get an in-site into the lifestyle of one of the older drug free for life trainers.all the best .

many readers (about 40-50 visitors per day) but most just read and are affraid to post. C' mon people! Anyway, great job Bob and also to the mods Jim and

Latest Workout

Man this place is not as lively as it once was! Anyway, since I have been training for a Highland Game this coming weekend I thought I'd share what I have
been doing in the weight room. My workouts had varied some with explosive work doing "stone" squats ( a version of single leg squats), alot of
Olympic lifts and supplemental lifts and Complexes. Yesterday's workout took one hour exactly, including the time it took to change clothes. Short, heavy
and hard.

For a warm up I did 10 easy minutes on a recumbent exercise bike then 2 sets of a Dan John complex:
Row x 8
Clean x 8
Front Squat x 8
Press x 8
Back squat x 8
Good Mornings x 8

All of the above was done with a mere 95lbs loaded on the bar. The bar was picked up once and no set down until all exercises were completed. That made one
set.

I then moved on to Power Cleans 5x 3, then 3x1 at 215lbs
Front Squats 5x3 (...

Greetings y'all!! Well yesterday was my 42d birthday and as I am in yet another location away from home and people I care about, I spent it lifting. I
picked on lift, lightened the weight and did 42 reps with it,. I chose the overhead squat. It felt so good, I did cleans that way next. For awhile I was afriad
this might be my last birthday on Earth! My heart was pounding and as Hoffman would say I was "huffing and puffing"! I then did some push jerks and
one arm DB snatches Goerner style 3 reps but starting at the 25s and working up to the 115s (that is as big as they got at the base gym). All told the workout
took almost exactly 30mins start to finish. I was soaked, breathless and yet invigorated. I think i will make this a tradition but....I am gonna stop at 50!!
