If you can make it next year, I know for a fact you will love it. So much fun, it goes by so fast. We (wife and I) usually get in FRI morning, spend the day at
the hotel, or in the restaurants / bar, in the lobby seeing all the folks arrive, etc.

Was fun hanging with Ken Patera in the bar, had dinner with David Prowse on FRI night, etc. Great time...

my own kitchen and go grab a cold beer at the "O" Club.

Spent the weekend at the AOBS 2008 with Mr. Kono. He said he did coach the US like bigcracker mentioned.

After we did our historical / collectors meeting, Tommy, Clyde Emerich, Red Lerille, and 103 year old Joe "The Great" Rollino
did a nice "Wisdom of the Ages" seminar, some great stories from Kono.

Already looking forward to next year.

That was interesting.

It seems strange that Tommy coached the Mexicans and the West Germans, but never the US.
The politics of who gets this job or that in US weightlifting is as full of "intrigue" as governmental
politics it seems.

Just another question, Dave: Is he well known in Hawaii? Do people he encounters realize that he is a legend. It's funny how you can have a multi-world
champion/record holder and he ( or she ) can live in total anonymity just because their sport happens to be olympic weightlifting. Norbert Schemansky comes to
mind, but there were so many greats from the "golden age" of American weighlifting that, sadly, never received the recognition they deserve.

Jim I will talk to Mr. Kono soon and ask his opinion on it. I had planned to call him yesterday but never got to it. I can't speak for him but from
conversations I have had with him in the past and from what I have read in his book, he does think most trainees waste gym time either by doing useless
exercises or by training too often thereby cutting into recuperative time. He is still big into supporting Olympic lifting and very active in the international
scene. HE IS ANTI-DRUG!!!! He travels alot, but Mon, Wed and Sat he is at the Nuuano YMCA to coach whoever is wise enough to listen to him.

I know this sounds nerdy but the best analogy I can think of to describe him would be the Jedi master Yoda. To the unknowing he is very unassuming, wears
"slippahs" just like 99% of the population here in Hawaii and is very soft spoken but passionate about Oly lifting. You would never know he was one
of the greatest ( if not THE greatest) Olympic lifter the USA has ever...

Great gem Dave. Thats exactly the cut-off date I've always used for articles and pictures in the History section of NaturalStrength.com. After 1960 there
are a lot of questions with the BIG NAMES. Prior to 1960 (for Americans) they were natural. The Russians had the stuff and were the first to use it on athletes
right after WW2. (They got it from the german scientists who used them on SS troops to make them feirce in battle etc. The Russians were the first to figure
out how to apply them to athletics. I believe the 52 olympics in Helsinki? opened a lot of eyes. (We knew something was going on but didn't know what at
the time.)

Mr. Kono,
I hope this finds you in good health and spirits. I wanted to ask you a question but also tell you about a good deal I found on bumper plates. 4x45s and 2x25s
( not in kilos unfortunately) for $230 here in the islands. Not too shabby huh? It will do me for now I reckon.
