Fellow Inner Circle members, please allow me to reminisce a bit about someone who would have been an absolute natural perfect fit for this forum. Fourteen years ago today, Larry Licandro died tragically in an auto accident. Larry was a great lifter and an even greater friend. He competed in all three sports of the Iron game, in fact, in 1992, in a three month period he competed in powerlifting, weightlifting, and a bodybuilding contest. His best sport was powerlifting, and his best lift was the squat. He did an official 700 Lb squat at 220# bodyweight. For many years he owned Bruno's Health Club, in Levittown, N.Y.. This was in the 80s, and even then he was fanatical about keeping the gym clean. I realize that today many places claim to be clean, and pay a lot of lip service about being against drugs, but Larry actually had the guts to throw out guys who were using the crap. He made it abundantly clear that anyone using the sauce was not welcome at Bruno's. Larry's values were the old-style type, and he was a devoted York devotee--he actually spent several months working at York Barbell in the late 70s. As you could probably imagine, the weights at Bruno's were strictly Y-O-R-K weights. The exercises that were stressed were equally basic- hard, heavy squats, benches, presses, and deadlifts. Pushdowns, cable work, and pumping were looked down upon with a special scorn that only those of us who trained there could appreciate. Larry was the heart of many powerlifting teams that competed in the NY tri-state area. Many of us were inspired to compete thanks to Larry, and many of us still adhere to his lifting philosophy. Larry would have been a perfect match for this forum. He espoused the same beliefs and philosophies shared by the members of the inner circle. Perhaps he wasn't known nationally, but there are many of us ( right Chris ?) who still remember Bruno's and the man who made it so special, thereby ensuring that he will live on forever.
