Anyone ever try these? I have a 16 pond shot and did some of these the other day. They aren't easy.

I have done these and enjoyed them. the grip will give before you get a great forearm workout tho,but who cares?

Things this exercise will improve:
1. Your ability to palm a basket ball, then burst it in your hands. 2. Bear claw the face of a toner who asks how the exercise will help rip up his lower abs. |

I remember doing something like this in high school--we would take our shots ( 12 pounders ) and do crude curls and reverse curls. Of course we had no idea of
exactly what we were doing or how effective it would be, it was just something that we were taught by our coach. Today I have an 18 Lb. shot, it is not steel
but plastic filled with sand, and because of its size, it is difficult to palm, but that does not stop me from trying. ( I sometimes labor under the delusion
that my hands will grow bigger the more I try to grab this thing.)
BTW, I like Shikantaza's second suggestion. That alone is enough of a reason to keep doing them. |

In John Brookfield's book "Mastery of Hand Strength" he wrote about driving a nail through a baseball or softball then bending the
exposed end into a hook. The hook allows you to hang weights from a chain.
It's the same premise as using a shot put for reverse curls, timed holds etc. but it allows progressive resistance. Another plus; the covering of a baseball is much more plyable thus allowing you to dig your fingers in.

thats a great idea. I would use a softball, bigger, harder to grip,so you'll use less weight most likely

I recall Brookfield wrote something to the effect that the size of the trainees hands would dictate whether a baseball or softball could be used.
ie; a baseball might be a better choice for a female trainee or a man with small hands. |
