A Question About Machines |

The gym is in the process of purchasing a whole bunch of new equipment. Some of the new stuff on order ( and arriving soon ) are Cybex machines. I was
wondering if anybody has ever used any of the Cybex machines? I have seen- and used- a cybex shoulder machine. It was plate-loaded, and actually was not a
bad piece of equipment. Are their machines any good compared to Hammer Strength and Nautilus?

Jim if I had to grade equipment on a A-F scale, I would give Cybex a C+. Just my own opinion. I think they are okay as far as machines go. I've never used
the plate loaded variety though.

I would describe Cybex "in general" as a toner machine. That does not mean that all of the machines they make are no good, but they clearly make
their stuff aimed for the toner crowd, (Which is why their machines are do popular in MOST gyms.) Drew used to bash them all the time. Jim, If you still have
his number, call Drew. He is the worlds expert on machines as you know. Be carefull going heavy on them till you really get used to the movement. I had a few
clients get injured using CYBEX while traveling. Many of their machines have a slightly circular movement when there should not be one. Some of their
horizontal/vertical pushing machines are more like a fly than what it is labelled. (My clients thought they were doing horizontal push but the motion was more
like a fly.) I'm sure you can make them work if you have to but if it were me I'd find another gym if too many good machines (Hammer, Southern, some
Nautilus, Med-Ex, Pendulum etc.) were replaced by them.

When I say some Nuatilus it is because they have changed ownership a bunch of times. The OLD stuff is GREAT and most of the new stuff is good, but there were a
few periods when they drifted a little in hardcore quality with new ownership.

I agree with everything Bob said. A FEW Cybex pieces are ok, but most suck. Nothing beats Med-X but it is hard to find and some of the movements might not
have enough resistance for you.

Jim I'm with these guys also. I won't go as far as to say Cybex is junk but it aint great! My gym has alot of their pieces. I never got hurt with them
but they just never felt good or "right" to me.

I think with all lines of equipment, some pieces can range from great to not-so-good so take the advice given here but experiment with them and see how they
work for you.

I went to a Gym in the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Fla. They had just completely redone the Hotel and it was very nice. I went to the Gym and it also was a
nice setup. All Equipment brand new and most of it Cybex. The next day I went up to use it and had planned to go everyday while my Wife was working a
Conference. I ended up only going that one day and just for a few minutes. I didn't like any of the machines. All felt "off." Some were just
painful. Big disappointment.

Thank You for the feedback, guys. While I don't know if the new owners intend on keeping the Hammer Strength stuff, they are in the process of getting new
stuff. It would be a shame to see the gym turned into a "toner-type" of club. I have another phrase to describe such clubs ( but the rules of the
forum prohibiting offensive language prevent me from using it.) There are already some subtle signs that are not encouraging. I would hate to leave, but I
would never ( could never ) train in a toner atmosphere. Thank you again fellow members of the forum. Your opinions are welcome as well as valued.

Jim, I know that you used to train at IRON ISLAND. Please tell me that this is NOT the gym you are talking about!

Sad to say, Bob, but it is. Ralph sold the gym about a month ago to a group of people. Ralph is still there as a trainer but the new owners are the ones who
are making the changes that I mentioned. The name will be changed to South Shore Fitness. In fact, when I was there earlier today, the new machines arrived.
While they had only unloaded a few while I was there, what I did see was not very encouraging--the new machines were not plate loaded but instead had a
selectorized weight stack. They definitely had a "toner" look to them. There are also rumors that a lot of the lifting equipment ( rack, custom
benches, platforms) are the next things to go. They are already in the process of selling off a lot of the old equipment. It's sad to see what is happening
to what was once a great gym. Each day I go there, I never know what to expect.

Jim, thats sad. Time to find a new gym! Just the fact that they didn't want the name means they are ignorant of strength training. Get rid of Iron Island
Gym and replace it with South Shore Fitness? Definately a TONER gym now. The end of an era. (Its better, I guess, not to see the name Iron Island on a toner
gym).

It is sad. The new machines are in place and they are definitely toner machines. There are also so many of them there is hardly any room. Unfortunately, it is
the sad end of an era. I'm in the process of looking for a new place to train. Unfortunately, training at home is not an option. My house does not have a
basement, or garage. There's always the living room, I guess. So now I have to find a new gym. The hard part is finding a place that has a power rack ( few
places have them) and allows the use of chalk ( almost no places do.) I joined Iron Island when it opened in 1992, so it was a good run. I have nothing to
complain about--Dr. Ken ( when he owned it),and Ralph were always good to me and I got spoiled by having access to such a great facility with such great
equipment and a great atmosphere. And I still have a couple of Iron Island T-shirts which nobody can take away.
