We'll be moving into a new home at the end of the summer & will thankfully have a small space for a home gym, no more commercial gym...yes!!! If anyone
can offer recommendations for specific brands of the following its much appreciated: 1. Olympic bar and plates 2. portable, adjustable squat stands 3. self
spotting device (I am familiar w/IronMind's) 4. shrug/hex/trap bar 5. chin/dip station or bars, separate or together. 6. bench all the equipment will not
remain set up when not in use it will be tucked away in a corner, hence the need for portability. thanks.

This is only my opinion, based on having used these brands, but here it goes: I would get the bar from York ( as well as the weights.) I've heard something
of a rumor that York's plates and all are being made in China. I don't know if that's true--if it is, then check out Ivanko. Their training line of
equipment is affordable yet the quality is still there. If you don't have room for a power rack, then maybe Ironmind is the way to go--you can get the
squat stand combination chinning/dipping attachment. As for the trap bar, you can check out John Wood's website, I believe he sells them. His equipment is
top-notch and his service is excellent. As for a bench, there are a lot of places to get one. It's just a matter of finding one that is going to be strong
enough and reasonably priced.

I agree with Jim all the way. I would get a power rack if I was you. I know you want portability to store away when not in use but to be 100% safe and to train
hard when alone you need a power rack. The rack can take care of alot of things if you get a good one,chins/dips,pulldowns,squat station, benching, and so on.
its really economical space wise but you can't "put it away" tho.

I have bumper plates sold by NY Barbell. Good plates and Werksan is a great company. They carry quality equipment.

I would get the bar & plates from either York or Ivanko like Jim said. I hate to say it but I think I would (now) use Ivanko first.
I would check with a company in Texas called PRO-MAXIMA too. They are very under-rated (or unknown) and make pretty good stuff. Jay Trigg lives near the company and got a lot of his stuff from them. He told me about them several years ago. I got a HEAVY DUTY power rack and several other items from them over the last few years. They make pretty heavy duty stuff. Be sure to ask for the **commercial/Heavy Duty line. They are solid equipment for a cheap price (compared to other companies). Call BURT, he will fix you up at (713) 667 - 9606. I previously heard a few bad things about the company (from other equipment makers). Rumors like they were not heavy duty etc. Pure B.S. I was almost afraid to buy from them. Jay convinced me they were good and I'm glad I listened to him. One guy, (I won't mention his name but he sells equipment), hates them and bashes them. The truth is that he hates them because they make stuff just as good as he sells for half the price! If you get the commercial line you can't go wrong. They have different lines of equipment so be sure to tell Burt that you want the *commercial heavy duty line of equipment. Call me and I'll tell you what to get if you are not sure. They have a HUGE catalog.

We had some Pro-Maxima stuff at the gym I worked out in in Baghdad. I thought it was good equipment but Bob is right they don't have the brand recognition
yet.

I outfitted the Haines City, Fla. Police Dept. Gym with Pro Maxima. We did the gym complete wall to wall equipment from them.

Dumbbells, maybe some odd-objects and as I refer to it, "the machine" (your own body) is all you need.

thanks for the tips, much appreciated. I did discover some adjustable saw horses at Lowe's w/a 1,000 pound load capacity, price tag=$40. Not a bad price
for a spotting system. There is also a kids playground not even 10 yards from our back yard, theres my chinning bar, though it may stink in the rain or ice.
Will keep you all posted and let you know what I get. I eventually will want an elliptical/cross trainer as well.

There are some good dorway gyms on the market for chins-hold as much weight as the wall can stand, and set up in seconds-New York Barbells has one on sale for
$44.00.

I have enclosed a link to some photos of our new place. Most of the equipment is by Startrac including the Max Rack, who Startrac bought. This is a fantastic
bit of equipment and by far my favourite piece to use. It feels just like using freeweights in a power rack beautiful and smooth. Startrac also bought out Flex
gym equipment and have incorporated many of Flex's ideas in their benches. Hope it gives you some ideas.

Yo, jonsgym,
Looks like a good setup. The gym I go to has one of the Maxracks. Seems like a pretty good setup. BTW, for the purpose of adding the weight of the bar to the amount you are lifting, would the bar be counted around 45 lbs? Keith. |

Yes Keith, I reckon that the Max Rack bar would be 45lbs. It feels less because it runs so smooth but then you have to add in the weight of the brackets that
hold the bar. So I think 45lbs would be right.
