Sans Power Racks |

I belong to a Gold's Gym about three minutes from where I live. When they first opened in 2006 there was one power rack. Now they took it out! I asked a
couple of employees about it, no one knew why it was taken out, but I got the distinct impression that they will not be replacing it. It makes me sick!

They needed the space for another treadmill. Or maybe someone dropped a barbell while curling.

What a sad commentary on the current state of training. Imagine a place that calls itself a gym, a big name chain no less, and they don't even have a power
rack. At least they used to have one, I guess that's better than never having one in the first place. But, like Stan implied, it was probably used mainly
for curls. Unfortunatley, that is what they have been relegated to in most places. Nothing like tightening up your stylish belt, putting on your pretty little
gloves, and loading up a barbell to a whopping 95 Lbs. and blasting and pumping your "guns." Sometimes, I envy guys who don't train at a
commercial gym.

Let's face it-the comercial gyms are in it for profit, so they are going to cater to the crowd that brings just that-the unifomed, naive, and gullible-the
small gyms that offer true weight lifting can't compete and stay in business. Take the money wasted and invest in the best stuff you can get for your home
gym- whether its a power rack in the basement, garage, or a set of heavy dumbells in the bedroom. I make do with a heavy set of dumbells, a shrug bar, chin up
bar and dips. At 57 yo, thats all I need.

You nailed it Dave! It's all about their bottom line.
They're not concerned with who uses the equipment correctly, in fact they love when clueless people join. Either the poor sap hires a Gold's Gym personal trainer or they stop going all together. Gold's makes $$$ either way. Please don't feel bad, there are six squat racks so the tough guys still have a place to do their straight bar curls. |

Especially now, with the New Year's Resolutioners invading gyms all across the land, things will be crowded at commercial gyms. And these same uninformed,
clueless persons are the bread and butter of the big chains and their staff of equally clueless, uninformed "trainers." This time of year is probably
the worst time to go to the gym--way too many people. It usually takes about a month or so for them to lose interest, forget about their resolutions, and then
things will start to open up at the gym again.

Strangely enough, it doesn't seem any more crowded than any other time of the year; maybe, due to the economy most people don't have the money to spend
on a gym membership.

I've noticed a slight difference. One thing that could make a difference at my gym is that the iniation fee has increased. That may be enough to sway some
people, but there are still more people, and consequently less parking, than before the holidays.

Jimmy, Where are you training now? I haven't seen you at Ultimate for a while.

I still go to Iron Island from time to time ( my membership there expires in August.) In addition, I train at work- I'm back teaching at the Fire Academy
and there is a weight room there. It's OK, but nothing special. No power racks of course. But there are several Stairmasters which are relatively new. Iron
Island has two old Stairmasters (one of which is perpetually broken.) I was just at Ultimate last weekend ( Sat morning.) It is so difficult to find a good
lifting gym, as you well know. No one place has everything.

A good friend o fmine was injured at the Fire Academy last week. He was doing a repelling drill and something happened and he fell 4 stories into the net,
Dan"Fro" Jollen. He is in WFD with me.
