A New Trend?? |

I have noticed something recently at the gym. After observing several trainees, I noticed that they are doing partial reps. Not the partials as advocated by
Brooks Kubik in Dinosaur Training, but more like what was done ( and popularized ) by Ferrigno in the movie Pumping Iron. Just today there were two guys
training the bench press. They were actually using adjacent benches, and one was basically bouncing the bar off his chest mayber 6"-8" for about 12
reps. The second guy was lowering the bar maybe about half-way and then locking it out. The first guy did all his movements the same way-curls, pushdowns,
etc.. Not one complete movement, and, not coincidentally, not one impressive muscle on his body. It seems that there are more and more people doing this. Is
this a trend or maybe something that is just happening at the gym where I train?

I don't know about a trend but the owner of the gym I was managing, actually teaches people he trains to do partials on the leg press. I mean ridiculous
crap. The way he does it is less than the dip in your legs in a push press. He says it gives you more size and a greater "pump". I wanted to vomit.
Of course he has flamingo legs. You can see a photo of him by googling David Feather, bodybuilder. He also has "sugar in his tank". lol

I do believe in "partials" inside a Power rack for building strength and to get past "sticking points" in a lift. The other seems more on
the "gimmicky" phase that many go through. Dave, tell them if they really want to try partials, to get inside the rack and load up. Maybe they have
been reading about the New (really old) " JReps/Zone Training" that swept the HIT Boards for awhile. Hardly anything really new out there. I'm
sure the Clown Pants will make a comeback some day.

Jim I do partials in the squat (worked up to almost 800 in about a 6 inch movement) and sometimes in the bench press doing lockouts. I think they are great for
building tendon and ligament strength and strengthening the joints to handle heavier weights. The crap I am talking about is guys just not doing the entire
movement out of laziness/ignorance. I would venture to say that less than 2% of the folks I see "squat" even go to parallel. The excuse is "full
squats are bad for your knees". All I know is once I quit doing just to parallel and started doing full ass-to-grass squats, my hip bursitis went away and
so did a majority of my tendonitis in my knees.

If people would check their ego's at the door they would make better strength and health gains and not be injured nearly as much. |

I see close to half the people at my gym not doing full range exercises. Some because the weights too heavy, some lack flexability, some because they know no
better. I personally never enjoyed doing partials even in the rack, and found they didn't translate back to strength gains in the full range movement. And
as I got older, and unfortunately more fragile (yes I'm whining!) considered them to be not worth the risk. I do understand that alot of people do feel they
are a good thing and have used them to their advantage. I kinda lump partials with SuperSlow, might be beneficial but I got absolutely zero enjoyment out of
training in that style.

I've used partials in the power rack, and they are effective as a tool for increasing one's poundage in the lifts. I've done partials in the bench
( lockouts), squat ( 1/2, and 1/4 squats), and deadlift ( from just below the knees.) I do them less now, but I think there is still a place for them. What I
was talking about are the ones who do the "pumping" partial reps in the mistaken belief that, because they are not doing a complete rep, they are
subjecting their muscles to constant tension, therefore they will make better/faster gains.

partial squats in the smith machine. I see that alot at my gym. There was a guy the other day doing them with the pad AND towels wrapped around the bar for
cushioning. He was a very big guy too, which was funny to see. And no, he wasn't doing dino partials, they were the sissy type. Lots of younger high school
football players come in and squat with the barbell but only go to about 1/4 depth too, they get so self conscious about how much is on the bar and what it
should look like that they are training w/more weight than they can handle, so if they tried to go all the way down they either fall over or get crushed.
Partial dips are another biggie, I sometimes for amusement count how long someone's set takes on those, usually a set of 10 reps in 10 seconds and of
course they're "false partials". The third biggie is "false partial" barbell curls in the squat rack for an eternity when people are
waiting to get in and actually squat.

That is probably one of the most annoying things of all--- having to wait to use the the squat rack because some yo-yo is doing his barbell curls. And, if that
is not enough, he is usually using pansy weights.
