Has anybody tried fasting cardio?

I've heard about it. I think the theory behind it is just like you said, since you have no carbs in your body it's forced to burn fat. Supposedly
that's the reason the military makes recruits run and do PT first thing in the morning before eating breakfast. I guess it does make sense, but I prefer to
have something ( fruit, orange juice) before I do cardio.

This is a much debated topic. It was supposedly a big breakthru in fat burning a few years back. You can find just any many people say that it doesn't
matter. the body stores glycogen for fuel so a meal beforehand wont matter. You cannot have no carbohydrates in your system, unless of course you never eat
any, which is a huge mistake. The fact that your burning calories and putting your body in a caloric deficit is the main factor in losing weight. The first
thing I do when I wake up is reach for food or a beer(just kiddin)

Actually, I do remember a time when I was training with Drew that he had a friend who would train with him, and this person would start each day with a
Guinness. He was from Ireland ( I'm not implying anything here,LOL) and it was just the way he started each day. Even when he would train---he would have a
Guinness, then head to Drew's and train. Imagine doing a high-intensity workout right after downing a Guinness. Maybe the carbs in the beer provided him
with energy.

Irish breakfast of champions "Guinness". I prefer somethin a little less heavy for my breakfast, then move to Guinness around lunch time, then strictly
Irish whiskey for dinner and beyond.

I've also heard stories of some big-name lifters of the 80s who would show up at a meet after having had "a few." I guess whatever works.
I've also heard the theory that if you strength train first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, particularly if you do high-rep squats and/or deads,
then that would help stimulate the production of testosterone. Again, I can't imagine waking up in the morning and doing heavy squats without having had
anything at all to eat. How could you do your workouts any justice without any food in your body? I'm not talking about a huge meal, but something to
produce some sort of energy--like a piece of fruit, juice, oatmeal.

you gotta figure 8 hours of sleep (hopefully), and you probably eat your last meal of the day a few hours earlier, now after a workout(hour long or more). your
talkin at least twelve hours of fasting. that can't be good for strength and muscle building.

I gave the fasting cardio a try.
As it turns out, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. In fact I've grown to like it! In fact on my lifting days, Mondays and Thursdays; after a 30 minute warm up on the elliptical, I put myself through a complete workout, breathing squats and all. I drink A LOT of water before during and after, and I really think that helps. I drink a fruit and yogurt smoothie w/protein powder as a post workout meal. So far progress has been good. |

How have your strength workouts been going? I don't know if I would try to lift without having something. The protein drink following the workout sounds
like a good thing. I remember reading somewhere, I'm not sure where, recently which stated a high-protein drink following your workout is much better than
drinking one of those fluid replacement drinks which usually contain a lot of sugar. I also remember the carbo energizer drinks that they used to sell years
ago. Some of them were pretty good. Most of the big vitamin companies had their own version of a carbo drink and in addition to giving you a
"boost'" the taste was quite good.

I always got nauseous if I ate anything more than an Orange or Grapefruit and half a cup of black coffee before I trained, so Training on an empty stomach
pretty much comes natural to me.
Keep in mind that I work evenings; which allows me to get up in the morning and head straight for the gym, so it's not as if I'm going all day without anything to eat. |

not trying to start a debate here. just curious. Train if you sleep 8 hours, and i assume you dont eat right before bed, then to the gym, then eat, isn't that
an awful long fasting period?

I don't like to eat before going to bed. Especially a big meal. Sometimes, when I work nights at the firehouse, the guys will make a late meal, and the
absolute worst thing to do is to eat a large meal then go to bed. Firehouse meals are notorious for being (1) very good and (2) very, very plentiful. I used to
work in a firehouse that ate late ( different houses have different traditions) and by eating late you are naturally going to be extremely hungry, and
therefore be tempted to eat more than you should. The fact that the food is so good makes it even easier to overeat. Plus, add the fact that there is ALWAYS
extra food---one of the worst sins is to not purchase enough food--and you could see how you really have to discipline yourself to not eat too much. Going to
bed with a stomach full of food just adds to the problem, and if you throw in waking up and having to respond to a fire, with all of its inherent physical
exertion, and you have the makings of a potential problem.

All I remember from cybergenics was looking at the routine they gave and almost puking from the volume and frequency. And that was back when I was DOING muscle
mag, roid routines myself!!!!

Ah yes, cybergenics. THE program that was going to revolutionize bodybuilding. I, too, knew a friend who tried it. The diet and supplement part was almost
impossible to follow, especially if you worked full-time. He gave up on it after only about a month. Cybergenics was also very expensive, and the fact that he
didn't like coming up with the monthly price didn't help. Having said that, I also remember that he tried weedy's anabolic paks, with pretty much
the same ( worthless ) results.

I don't think they're still in business. I know that weedy was sued for the bogus claims he made with his anabolic paks, nevertheless, he still made a
ton of money over the years off the impressionable, aspiring weight trainers who bought his bogus products and read his worthless rags.

I know there are alot more restrictions in the supplement business than there used to be,but one scan thru a muscle mag will show you that it is still
thriving.
