Other than deadlift what other exerises would you use it for, just pulling ones or pushing too? May give it a go instead of the trap bar I usually use for DL. Just stopped using wrist straps to lift and it's pretty painful on my hands, don't know if the knurling is just a bit extreme.

Posts: 119 (11-Apr-10 03:26:52) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	LONGDOG,,, dont be a wussy,,, lol,,,, just grip the bar as if ya life depended on it,, you will be thankfull for the knurling when the load gets heavy mate,,as far as the 2" bar ya can use it for many lifts,benchpress,press,curl,row,etc etc,dont just hold the bar when ya perform a lift,throttle it,all ya lifts will seem easier.ya need to stick to a routine for long enough for addaption to take place.

Posts: 98 (11-Apr-10 04:13:32) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	LOL I wasn't expecting sympathy LOL I do just grimace and bear it. Ditched the wrist straps to improve grip, just a bit of chalk. You're right I'm not lifting heavy weights but a 308lb DL for 5 slow reps+F and a couple rest pause reps yesterday is my best and tales it's toll on my soft boy hands LOL. Still going upwards each session ) I reckon I'll start using the thick bar for all barbell work, I'll give it a shot at DL but may stick with the trap bar for DL for the sake of my back. Can't find any other specific grip improvers in the gym other than a bar and rope for rolling. I'll just need to re-adjust my weights to take into account the heavier bar. Any idea what they usually are? Save a bit of experimantation. Cheers, wussy Kev ;O)

Posts: 119 (11-Apr-10 14:19:38) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Kev if ya backs dodgy then stick with the trap bar,many on here have had great success with it mate,using a thick bar is a personal choice,some do, some dont,i use the thick bars once in a while and do other exercises for my grip,odd object lifting,hanging from a bar with weight attached,holding a heavy barbell with an overhand grip at waist height taken out the rack.farmers walk,the list is endless.i would build as much strength as possible in the big lifts while training my grip hard in other ways,ya may limit your progress at this point if ya switch to thick bars for all ya exercises.thats just my opinion Kev mate some will disagree and theres plenty on here who probably know far more than me, all the best, john

I've just been relying on grip development from other bar work and using a wrist roller at the end ( as well as moving plates about with a pinch grip). No specific grip devises at the gym that I've dicovered. Just though as I'd seen the thick bar it might be worth a go, but yeh definietly sticking with trap bar for DL Kev

I always liked to use the thick bar for curls,works your arm right down to the fingertips. Get some CoC grippers for improving your grip.

Posts: 48 (13-Apr-10 11:46:27) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	depends on the thickbar. An Ironmind Axle is hollow and 15kg or 33#. A solid 2"x 7' bar would be about 70# from what I remember. I have an Ironmind Axle myself. I use it for most exercises except for squat which I prefer a regular bar. I find that thickbar work in general is exceptional for building usable hand strength. I definately use it for Double Overhand DL and rarely use a regular bar for DL anymore since my hand strength has caught up to my injury limited back strength at around 410. My regular bar DL only being about 425 right now. It took a few years to get there though. Working thickbar can definately make a difference in being able to hold onto a regular bar too. One of my former trainees who Double Overhand DL's about 390-400 Pulled 727 at a big Raw meet last weekend. He has no trouble hanging onto the bar anymore.

No scales there so I'll leave a question in the 'book' to see what they have to say abou weight, unless by some fluke some one esle is there when I am.

Posts: 98 (18-Apr-10 14:50:07) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Definitely a home made one having had a look at it and the welded inner collars and also a home made 2" thick dumbell bar. Look like beasts, solid and heavy, no knurling or even hand markers except where it's pitted with chalk. Left a note in the log book to see how much they weigh.

I knew a guy who could double overhand 600# on an axle, but he had thumbs that were like 12" long, so he could hook grip it. ET

A hook grip is never allowed on them in competition because it totally defeats the purpose. I couldn't do that anyway as the tip of my thumb barely brushes the tip of my middle finger on the 2" bar. On the Inch dumbell there is about an inch between my thumb tip and the tip of my middle finger. When I lift that thing it totally feels like a pinch lift. Whereas I have friends and training partners with big hands who can actually touch tips or better on that thing. The current WR on the Double Overhand Axle DL for grip contests is 464 I believe. I've seen as high as 500# pulled though without a hook grip outside of competition by some very strong big handed guys though. - Aaron

But I was trying to find the results of a Super Grip contest where Matt pulled without a hook grip and I thought the weight was above 440lbs. And that was about a decade ago if I remember right. I'm sure he would've gone 500+ in a contest if he had continued training. He's also the guy I saw snatch the Blob the first time he tried it and one-arm clean and jerk 190lbs on an Axle out in a field. I'll keep checking on that internet archive to see what his actual result was because now I hate not being able to remember big performances like that.
