Had an interesting experience last night. I live in Shetland in the UK where there is yoal racing ... racing clinker built 6 man rowing boats over a 1km course. Depending on sea conditions it usually takes around 6 minutes or less at race speed.
I was a bit anxious due to my recent health and no cv training at all, just an abbreviated whole body HIT routine once a week
The outcome thought was that even though I only train once a week with no CV I was able to pull easily without even being out of breath unlike the other guys of 'normal' health, even the ones who had been on the concept 2000 rowing machines in the winter.
Seems to me that the high intensity and relatively heavy weight work out has meant that, for all I'm exhausted walking much or even jogging steady for 100m, the 'strength' demand of the rowing is relatively low enough that over that time period it's not a great stress. I did 4x 1km training runs plus a bit of easy rowing and not even a stiff muscle today. Got to say I'm amazed!
I assume that my compound movement based routine has come up trumps as the rowing is basically seated row and dealift combined for around 220 strokes.
Anyone else had similar experiences with strength training passing over to 'non-strength' sport in that way, or can explain what I experienced in a more scientific way?
