So at 45 y/o I am getting out on the platform once again. N Y State powerlifting championships are Sat 4/24. I weighed in at 264 and am lifting in the "single ply-tested" division.

OK....here's how it went... Squat 550(new PR) Benchpress 405 (new PR) Deadlift 575.....1530 total. My second best total ever, and my best total since 1995. Have to thank Jimmy Duggan for helping with my suit and wraps, and for takig pictures. As soon as I figure out how to post them I will. Maybe my 14 y/o's can show me how. Also thank Tommy Tedesco, also of Bruno's Gym crew for showing up and helping out. I feel like I got hit by a bus...Chris

The spirit of Bruno's is alive and well, thanks to Chris. Nice job, Natch! Chris would have had a new PR total as well if he had pulled his final D/L attempt. I think he got cold from the long wait between attempts ( 20 lifters is too much for one flight) and the fact that the sun went down and it got cold out. Indoors and he would have smoked it. Anyway, Natch did a great job and he ignited a spark in Tom Tedesco ( it would be great to have Tommy join the forum) and I am definitely going to join that gym in the next couple of weeks. Also, Chris, thanks for the email, I'll check it out.

Thanks to all, and to Jimmy again for taking the pictures. Joe, the owner of one of the gyms I go to (yeah, I go to 2) asked me to make 8x10 prints to hang on the wall in the gym. He and 2 other guys did a "body-beautiful" show a few weeks ago and they are going to hang those pics as well. There will be pics of 3 guys with brown paint and oil in their underwear, and me in the hole squatting. Like I tell the younger guys at the gym, If I can still get out there and lift there is no reason why they, at 1/2 my age also get out there and lift. And it just goes to prove that "basic" "old-fashioned" multi-joint movements just plain work. Squats, deads, presses, rows....basics. Nothing fancy, no damn machines. Just honest hard work....but everyone on this forum knows that already. Chris

looks great Natch. One thing I noticed is great squat form. Your in good position in every picture. Very tight and compact, back perfect. Congratulations on your day

Grffn, Thank you for the compliment on my form. One thing that was ingrained into us from the start at Bruno's was form. Every rep had to be "contest legal" and then some. It is almost nausiating seeing some squats that are passed. That, and the triple layer canvas/kevlar/denim hybrid suits, with titanium stiching, and the Advanced Supplimentation (AS for short) turned me off from competeing for a long time until I realized that just because everyone else is wearing the fancy zootsuit (as Tedesco used to call them) and squattted high, and belly benched, didn't mean that I had to also. Hey Jgriff, what Chris doesn't mention is that his squats were so far better than the other guys competing, it wasn't even funny. When the head judge comes up to you and says that "you're squatting too deep," then that says something. Most of the squats in that meet that were passed were a joke, and, like I said, Chris's squats stood out like a sore thumb because of his depth.

let the other guys do it their way. Everyone, including the other competitors at a meet know the real deal. When someone comes up short on a squat and gets three ok's, everyone looks at each other and knows whats up. When the big boys bust out all the super gear everyone knows how much that adds to their lifts. I aint knockin anyone but I'm an old school type guy,and so are you guys. Natch you did awesome and you will stay injury free. I also believe you are maximizing your lifting ability by staying in perfect position. Wish I was there to see it live. Most guys I see at meets have a severe forward bend at the waist during squats. Very dangerous, and not the best leverage in my opinion, but they all seem to do it that way. Whens your next meet, keep it goin, I think we may have a champion here. You should try a raw meet. I see total domination there for you.

There used to be a few "raw" meets around the NY tri-state area. I even competed in a few. I remember a lot of times when Larry and I would talk about the shirts/wraps/suits and we'd both would wish that ALL of that stuff would be banned, but, of course, it never happened then, and it definitely will not happen now. Aside from the hundreds of pounds that the stuff adds, it's also VERY expensive. Competing is quite an expensive proposition.

I think raw meets are comin around a little more,in my area anyway. I would much rather compete in, or watch, for that matter a raw meet. Let the man do the lifting not a suit or wrap. Just me,not knockin the gear meets. Well I guess I am but just my preference. Its getting outta control. I know guys that add over a hundred pounds to their bench with their new supersuit. And don't want to train unless they use it because they can't take the drop off.

Seems odd to me when people know that the suits add so much that people want to compete. For me it would be much more satisfying to know I did the lifts un-assisted. It's really just a form of legitimised cheating in my eyes. Sureyl different suit and correct fitting make a big difference too?
No disrespect to natch for competing by the way, from what you've said if there was a raw meet you'd rather hace gone to that? |
