I don't know. The man did a LOT of good things- he was capable of great generosity, nobody can deny that. He was also capable of great creulty. He was a bully, and a blowhard, and he treated his employees like crap. People have short memories. Yes, he did bring the team back to glory in the late 70s. But by the early 80s they stopped winning, and by the late 80s he had run the team right into the ground. By 1990, the team was in last place, a total embarrassment. When he was suspended ( for the second time) Yankee fans were cheering. His second suspension was the best thing that ever happened to that team. Without his interference, the team developed young talent ( Jeter, Rivera, Posada, Pettitte) that otherwise would have been traded because he had no patience for young players ( he still had to be talked out of trading Rivera and also Pettitte at various times.) Even when he came back, he was still a hump, although the team was turning into a powerhouse again. Winning is the cure for everything. But even after they were on top again, he was still a bully- people forget that he constantly threatended to move the team to Jersey if NYC didn't build him a new stadium. He still got a sweetheart deal from the city, and even though the stadium is beautiful, most new yorkers can't afford to take their families there. I just don't know. I just can't get away from the fact that he routinely humiliated and ridiculed his players/coaches/managers in the papers on an almost daily basis. The fact that he had serious health problems for the last 5 or 6 years seemed to have softened his image, but you can't forget some of the crap that he did.
